Why sleep matters so much

Sleep is magical, the way it renews our focus and sets us up for a good - or sometimes challenging - day ahead. From transitioning the way we sleep as winter turns to spring, to the surprisingly powerful difference that fresh sheets can make to the quality of our rest, sleep shapes far more of our lives than we often realise.

In the latest edition of Camomile London Conversations, Dr Radha Modgil joins Leah and Daniela Boleto for a thoughtful discussion on why sleep matters so much. Together they explore the science behind rest, the small rituals that can transform our nights, and how seasonal changes affect the way our bodies recharge.

Warm, insightful and practical, this episode invites you to slow down, rethink your bedtime routine, and rediscover the simple magic of a truly good night’s sleep.

We often don't full take into account the importance in sleep on both our bodies and mental health. Here are some of Camomile's top tips:

  • Switch off your electronics an hour before bed.

  • Try to eat or drink 2–3 hours before going to bed to allow your body time to digest before sleep.

  • Give yourself time for a bedtime routine. In the same way you would start preparing your child for bed an hour before lights out, give yourself the same luxury. Slow down, get comfortable, maybe listen to some relaxing music or read a good book to help you unwind.

  • Take a warm shower or bath on cooler nights to help your body relax
  • On warmer nights, make sure your room is well ventilated. Cooler, fresher air can help your body maintain the lower temperature needed for good sleep. Many people sleep better in a slightly cool, ventilated room.

  • Change your sheets regularly. Visit our post on the benefits of fresh sheets and their role in your general health.

  • And most importantly, as Dr Radha has taught us, when you’re having trouble sleeping, don’t see it as a problem. Not every night will be perfect, but the more we see it as a problem, the more it can become an issue. Try the steps Dr Radha suggested and give yourself a break. Sleep will come if we let it.
